Vintage Garage Sale Tranforms Downtown West Chester Into Pop-Up Night Market First Fridays This Summer a Taste of the City to the Suburbs
West Chester Parks and Recreation proudly announces the return of their evening market A Vintage Garage Sale summer series that transforms a downtown parking garage into a pop-up retail event on First Fridays inDowntown West Chester in the Chestnut Street Parking Garage located at 14 E. Chestnut Street.
“We are thrilled to have our second season of these unique sales that bring shoppers to town while still supporting our local retailers,” said West Chester Parks and Recreation Director Keith Kurowski. “A night market like this is a wonderful addition to First Friday in Downtown West Chester. Attendees can shop, eat, and listen to live music all while enjoying a beautiful summer evening in West Chester.” Kurowski adds that the atmosphere is not what one would expect from a regular parking garage on these special nights, “Our landscaping sponsor, Finnerty Landscaping, turns the garage into an inviting atmosphere with plants, arbors, benches and other decor.”
The Vintage Garage Sale Friday evening market will kick off at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m., providing shoppers time to peruse the vendors for vintage finds throughout the early evening, with time to also walk the downtown shopping scene of First Friday and enjoy a delicious meal from any of West Chester’s premier restaurants.
First Fridays are exciting evenings in West Chester thanks to the West Chester Business Improvement District. Director Malcolm Johnstone says, “The West Chester BID believes this is a such a unique event that provides an anchor to First Fridays in town. To show our support we will be validating parking for up to two hours for anyone who purchases anything in town or at the sale that evening. This is just another reason to make West Chester a destination on First Fridays.”
Borough Manager Ernie McNeely says, “We designed this garage with the intent to use it for events like this and are glad that our parking structures in town are multi-functional and can adapt to the creativity and variety that this town embraces. Folks can park upstairs, shop on the lower level and then continue their experience with downtown shops, restaurants and nightlife.”
A variety of vendors will be selling vintage home goods and accessories, antiques, collectibles, up-cycled, repurposed and architectural salvage, vintage jewelry, clothing and original art and photography made with vintage components or vintage inspiration. Food trucks will be on site, with sweet cupcake offerings from Dia Doce and Korean cuisine with a twist wil
l be available from KaChi food truck—perfect for folks looking to grab a light bite before their main course in town.
In addition to food trucks and other delicious eats on site, A Vintage Garage Sale will feature wine samples from Kreutz Creek Winery. “West Chester has really embraced our locally made wines and I’m really happy with that,” Kreutz Creek Winery owner Carole Kirkpatrick says. During the May 3rd event, discounts on bottle purchases will be available at Kreutz Creek’s tasting room, located just a block away at 44 E Gay Street.
Vintage lovers can continue on to West Chester’s shops in town including Malena’s Vintage Boutique (at her new location of 101 West Gay Street), which will be open until 9 p.m. Ladies can explore this well-curated collection of vintage apparel and accessories. Other shops in town will also stay open until 9 p.m. to partake in First Friday activities.
Returning vendor Colleen Allison of freshvintage is looking forward to selling her vintage home goods at the sale. Colleen specializes in vintage furniture and home accessories with an eye towards industrial, farmhouse, and retro styles, which she sells at her shop located at Highland Orchards. “My favorite finds are the ones that set your home apart from your neighbor’s, like an antique school map for your wall, wooden produce crates used as shelving, or an industrial tool cart that serves as a bar.”
The May sale has been sold out for vendors but West Chester Parks and Recreation is currently accepting applications for other sales and they can be found at www.west-chester.com/
