West Chester Parks and Recreation proudly announces the return of their evening market, A Vintage Garage Sale. This summer & fall series transforms a downtown parking garage into a pop-up retail event on First Fridays in Downtown West Chester in the Chestnut Street Parking Garage located at 14 E. Chestnut Street.
“We are thrilled to have our third season of these unique sales that bring shoppers to town while still supporting our local retailers,” said West Chester Parks and Recreation Director Keith Kurowski. “A night market like this is a wonderful addition to First Friday in Downtown West Chester. Attendees can shop, eat, and listen to live music all while enjoying a beautiful evening in West Chester.” Kurowski adds that the atmosphere is not what one would expect from a regular parking garage on these special nights, “Our landscaping sponsor, Finnerty Landscaping, turns the garage into an inviting atmosphere with plants, arbors, benches and other decor.”
The Vintage Garage Sale Friday evening market will kick off at 4 p.m. and close at 9 p.m., providing shoppers time to peruse the vendors for vintage finds throughout the early evening, with time to also walk the downtown shopping scene of First Friday and enjoy a delicious meal from any of West Chester’s premier restaurants.
First Fridays are exciting evenings in West Chester thanks to the West Chester Business Improvement District. Director Malcolm Johnstone says, “The West Chester BID believes this is a such a unique event that provides an anchor to First Fridays in town. To show our support we will be validating parking for up to two hours for anyone who purchases anything in town or at the sale that evening. This is just another reason to make West Chester a destination on First Fridays.”
A variety of vendors will be selling vintage home goods and accessories, antiques, collectibles, up-cycled, repurposed and architectural salvage, vintage jewelry, clothing and original art and photography made with vintage components or vintage inspiration. Food trucks will be on site, with sweet treats and savory takeout with a twist — perfect for folks looking to grab a light bite before their main course in town. Folks can park upstairs, shop on the lower level and then continue their experience with downtown shops, restaurants and nightlife.
Vintage lovers can continue on to West Chester’s shops in town including Malena’s Vintage Boutique (at her new location of 101 West Gay Street), which will be open until 9 p.m. Ladies can explore this well-curated collection of vintage apparel and accessories. Other shops in town will also stay open until 9 p.m. to partake in First Friday activities.
Returning vendors Chris & Colleen Allison of freshvintage are looking forward to selling their vintage home goods at the sale. Their shop specializes in vintage furniture and home accessories with an eye towards industrial, farmhouse, and retro styles, which they sell at their shop located at Highland Orchards. “Our favorite finds are the ones that set your home apart from your neighbor’s, like an antique school map for your wall, wooden produce crates used as shelving, or an industrial tool cart that serves as a bar.”
The Vintage Garage Sale is an all-weather event and follows the scheduling of First Friday, where stores are open late and offer specials for everyone. Due to the evening market’s popularity over the past two seasons, an additional October sale date was added to the schedule. The 2014 dates are May 2nd, June 6th, August 1st, September 5th, and October 3rd.
